Water
Millions of people suffer from water shortages and poor hygiene. And all this is dramatically exacerbated by the climate crisis. Climate change is exacerbating overall water scarcity and may increase competition for limited water resources.
Access to clean water and sanitation is essential for survival and development – especially for young children. “Water and sanitation for all” is the sixth of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). But we are far from achieving this.
Around 2.2 billion people worldwide do not have regular access to clean water. Around 785 million people do not even have a basic supply of drinking water. By 2040, it is estimated that almost 600 million children will live in areas without sufficient access to water.
More than two-thirds of the earth is covered by water, but only less than three per cent of it is potable. An estimated 3.6 billion people now live in areas that are extremely water-scarce for at least one month a year. According to a UNICEF study, more than 1.42 billion people worldwide live in areas with overall high or extremely high water insecurity, including 450 million children.
What good is it if there is water nearby, but it comes from a polluted river and is full of pathogens? Without clean water and hygiene, diseases spread particularly quickly. Diseases can spread so quickly – a deadly danger for young children. Water must not only be clean, it must be “safe”.
Lack of water prevents schooling. When children have to walk long distances every day to fetch water for their families, they often miss the chance to go to school.
In 2019, only about 69% of schools worldwide had basic access to drinking water, and only 66% had sanitation facilities. Around 900 million children do not have access to hygiene at their school.
An important prerequisite for providing sufficient “safe” water, subsequently referred to as potable water, is the availability of electrical energy in required quantities and at an affordable price.
By fully integrating water treatment and desalination plants into the “Power&Life Container”, we can ensure the supply of potable water, provided there is surface or ground water. We also offer plants for the treatment of water for irrigation in agricultural environments.
We use proven technologies from our network partners that are best suited for the respective purpose and location. These are characterised by robustness, simple operation, low maintenance and thus low costs for operation. As standard, we use treatment plants with a capacity of 0.5 to 50 m3 litres per hour. Due to the complete “Power&Life Container” integration, monitoring and control of the plant by our staff is possible. The regular servicing of the treatment plants can also be carried out as part of the “Power&Life Container” service.
